What is uterus bicornis?

Uterus bicornis is a type of congenital anomaly of the uterus where there is a division of the uterus into two horns, each with its own fallopian tube and ovary. This condition occurs during early embryonic development when the Mullerian ducts, which form the female reproductive system, do not fuse completely. As a result, the uterus becomes heart-shaped or has a V-shape.

Women with a uterus bicornis may experience fertility problems, miscarriage, premature birth, and abnormal fetal positioning during pregnancy. This condition is usually diagnosed through ultrasound or MRI imaging. Depending on the severity of the anomaly, treatment may include surgery to correct any structural abnormalities or assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization.
